Delhi's biggest race begins tomorrow. And I am not talking about any marathon. I am talking about Delhi school nursery admissions.

新德里最大的比赛明天就要开始了。我不是讲马拉松，而是新德里的幼儿园入学。

Some parents will do anything to get their children into good schools.

有的父母会费劲心思让他们的小孩进入好的学校。 

“Hindi Medium” shows us a very real situation in modern India, and gives those for whom winning is everything a slap in the face. 
《起跑线》这部电影，为我们展现了现代印度的真实情景，给那些把胜利看作是一切的人一记响亮的耳光。

The film starts with the love story of a couple, Raj and Mita. The boy, a tailor’s son, is adorable, and the girl beautiful and forward thinking.

这部电影从一对恋人，Raj 和 Mita 的爱情故事开始。这个男生，是一个水手的儿子，非常迷人；这名女生很美丽，也很前卫。

A quick romantic sequence pushes the story 15 years ahead, when they are living a happy married life.

然后，一个快速的浪漫场景出现，将故事往后推了15年，此时，他俩已过上了幸福的婚姻生活。

But wait. Their daughter has come of school age and Mita is determined to get her into one of the top five primary schools in New Delhi.

他们的女儿已经到了该上学的年龄，Mita 决定让她去新德里排名在前五名的小学。

Raj, that's the number one school - Delhi Grammar School. They give admission forms to those who live close by.

All you've got to do, is get a house in Vasant Vihar.

Raj, now a fashion shop owner, is more than comfortable where he is, living a simple life in a market neighborhood.

But he’s a loving husband and will do anything his queen requests.但他是一个模范丈夫，会为家里的女王做一切事情。

We can't let Pia study in the same government school we did.

So they move away to an elite district where people only speak English and try hard to fit in.所以他们搬到了一个只说英语的精英区，并开始努力融入其中。 

But Raj’s habit of speaking Hindi and dancing to traditional songs embarrasses his wife in front of her party guests.

The world has become so competitive that if you don’t join the game, you will be left behind, socially and financially.

The couple soon realizes they have been too complacent and quickly hire specialists to help them all – daughter and parents – prepare for the upcoming school interviews.

They take on a complete makeover, from their appearance to saying all the right things.

If they ask you this question … just say "Sharing is Caring".

Because Sharing is … What was it? 因为分享就是… 是什么来着？

Despite the effort, the daughter fails to win a school place - the schools just can’t picture a shop owner as one of their elite.

尽管付出了努力，女儿还是没能得到学校的录取——学校无法接受一个潮品店主会是一个精英。

In a final desperate attempt, Raj enrolls to the last school as a poor family with forged papers. They even move to the slum in preparation for the school’s home visit.

在最后一次绝望的尝试中，Raj 以一个伪造的贫穷家庭身份进入最后一所学校，他们甚至搬到了贫民窟，准备接受学校的家访。

What happened? Just like you said… bankrupt… we went bankrupt. But how?发生什么事了？就像你说的，破产… 我们破产了。怎么破产的？

 There was a fire in our factory. Our partner betrayed us. Yes, our partner betrayed us.

我们的工厂着火了。我们的伙伴背叛了我们。是的，我们的伙伴背叛了我们。

And what do you know – it’s in these underprivileged conditions that the family makes real friends and gets help from the neighbors.

如你所见，在这种贫困的条件下，这家人才交到了真正的朋友，才得到了邻居的帮助。

Their daughter finally has someone to play with and gets admitted to the school, even though this means moving out of the slum and leaving their newly made friends.

他们的女儿最后终于找到了一个可以一起玩的小伙伴，并被学校录取。尽管这意味着他们要离开贫民窟，离开他们的新朋友。

It wouldn’t be a good drama if everything ends perfectly. A final twist sees Raj, eaten by guilt, confessing everything to the principal.

If I give this seat to a poor kid… how will I benefit from it? What?

And when that doesn’t work, he confesses to the entire school during a performance and takes his daughter away.

He’s determined that being a good person is more important than getting into a good school.

Education isn't what it was, it's a business now. But I won't educate my child by snatching someone's right.

Irfan Khan is as entertaining as ever, playing a convincing yes man as his wife catastrophizes about their daughter turning into a drug-using Khan 

还是那么有趣，在电影中扮演了一个唯唯诺诺的男人，当他的妻子在女儿变成一名嗑药的失败者后陷入大惊小怪的状态时尤为明显。

But this couple is hugely likeable. Everything they do is done for their daughter, and out of love for each other. 

但这对夫妻非常可爱，他们所做的一切都是为了女儿，为了对彼此的爱。

It’s easy to get carried away with “winning”, forgetting what you can lose in the process. 

人们很容易被胜利冲昏头脑，忘记你在做这件事时会失去什么。

All parents are faced with tough choices that the previous generations didn’t have to deal with.

所有父母都面临艰难的选择，而这些选择是上一代父母不必面对的。

But in the end, if we cannot do what is right, winning means nothing.

在最后，如果我们不能做正确的选择，胜利并不能代表什么。

I'm taking my child out of this school today.

我今天要带孩子离开这所学校。
