While sad and somewhat dystopian, it is also a great example of how people can cooperate and go to great lengths to get through hardship together. Stay strong Italy.

Oh no!!!! If someone had told me two months ago that our national sulkiness, and our tendency to keep 2 m distance from anyone but our own children would become an international standard, I would have laughed long and heartily. This is indeed a satanic virus if it’s turning you all into Finns!

I'm wondering where northern nations developed their sense of wide personal space and general 'standoffishness'. It can't have come from nowhere. Perhaps there were epidemics in the past, which taught people to keep their distance, and that became part of the culture of subsequent generations?

Good points. We have very long tradition of not trusting strangers, because they have typically meant trouble (Vikings raiding furs, Swedish rule, bishops converting, Russian rule). You looked for “wood chips coming downstream” which meant there were strangers upstream building fire, and probably planning to steal your storage or people. So you keep the distance to evaluate the risk ;)
In addition it is culturally very important not to bother others, and ensure you are invited properly. The distance in buses and in public places means: I am not going to bother you, don’t be alarmed. I respect your privacy.

Actually it's kind of uplifting and sad at the same time, I mean the cooperation between people all over the world to fight the common existential enemy. If humanity is in danger, then not Italy, USA or China are the ones responding, it's the humanity that responds, and everything else becomes just accidentals.

If this virus changes anything hopefully it's that we as a species learn that we have got to start working together. The virus doesn't care about our petty differences. It can kill any of us: rich, poor, black, white, gay straight, rightwing, leftwing, old and even in some cases the young. You cannot hide behind an imaginary line drawn on a piece of paper. You cannot build walls that stop this thing. All it takes is one infected person getting through and no country in the world can possibly stop everyone that wants to get in. The only way we can stop this happening again is by increasing cooperation particularly in healthcare. We need a more open world where people don't cover things up before they get out of control. We richer countries have got to start putting more money into the health systems of third world countries (and the USA). Because one sick person anywhere in the world can be a threat to us all. So we have got to start taking care of everyone.

Maybe because is more than what you see in the picture, a pandemic which made thousands of victims and you need social order to overcome it, and it is not something we are used to, the fear that even if you cooperate there's a chance you'll still get infected, and the fear of running out of food, and so many other factors which leads to anxiety, depression and desperation.

What is going on where you guys live? Everytime i've been to any supermarket in the last ten days (twice) there have been only about a tenth of the normal amount of customers inside.
Why would supermarkets be crowded? Doesn't make any sense, does it? People aren't going more often to the supermarkets now than before, they go less, so there have to be less people in them.

It's not that they are more crowded, but that to maintain physical distances they are limiting the number of people in at any one time.

it is but it's still much better than everyone being in the supermarket, imho the supermakets should be open at least 18/7 and people should have turns assigned to go buy groceries.
RichardEast

I don't know if this should be applauded. That queue is basically the result of strictly limiting the number of people that can get inside the supermarket.
Now though, you force all those people outside, where they are stationary, in the cold, rain etc... and probably in closer proximity to eachother than they would be in the supermarket.
Plus, what do you do if you are essential worker? (healthcare, public services etc.) Now, you need to add an extra 30 minutes to your day to wait in a queue for groceries.
Plus, a significant % of that queuing population has no risk from the virus, or is already immune to it, yet they need to suffer the same restrictions as someone in a high risk category.

The last part of your post is so stupid. The fact that most of those people will probably be fine even if they get the virus doesn't mean that they won't then spread it to the old or weak that will die because of it. Everyone must stay at home, not only for their own life, but for others too.
CagaTorroni

in closer proximity to eachother than they would be in the supermarket.
definitely not. And that's the point.
Plus, what do you do if you are essential worker? (healthcare, public services etc.) Now, you need to add an extra 30 minutes to your day to wait in a queue for groceries.
you have family who are doing home office and can manage to do this during the day, or volunteer delivery services, or you go on your day off, it's not like you have much else to do except sleep anyway.
You are not supposed to go every day to the supermarket, that's extremely irresponsible in these times.
So it's +30 minutes a week, which is non-problematic.
Plus, a significant % of that queuing population has no risk from the virus, or is already immune to it, yet they need to suffer the same restrictions as someone in a high risk category.
nobody has no risk, and to protect those in a high risk category the virus needs to not spread too fast, so even phantomatic safe people are called to the task. Besides, if you're non-risk and fall down or have any medical issue, if the hospital is overloaded you risk dying indirectly because of the coronavirus.
